Ella Mai New York Concert reviews
LR Hits Glasgow 11 wks late, we wish we/he had'nt
Having read reviews of other dates on this tour, it seems standard that Philappa Hanna, with a very strong voice, came out 20 mins late, setting the tone for the whole night. She was the support for the night and was pretty good. We've seen Ella Mai 3 times now. This was by far the worst. Overpriced tickets, a set list which had all his staples in but for some reason had 20 mins of the Commodores' "never heard ofs". Plus, he also did 'Still', 'Easy', 'Three Times a Lady' & 'Sail on'. So, it turned out to be The Commodores featuring Lionel Richie without any of the "dores" actually being there. I had wondered how he'd manage the duets/collabs off the Tuskegee album as this was the "Tuskegee tour". He solved it very slickly by not mentioning Tuskegee or referencing the album not even once! All in all, "short-changed" seemed to be the feeling as our section of the crowd left. The final defining moment was the one "downbeat" song 'Goodbye' that served as an encore of a fashion. Value for money? NO! I've got all the CDs/videos and can play what I like when I like. For 63, he managed to get through the set effortlessly. We've been a fan for 30 years, but this was our last live Lionel gig. Lionel living on past glories! All I can say is I can only echo most of the low scoring of the other Lionel review.
